The connection between water, sanitation and health 

OISCA Kottayam Chapter has a strong legacy in environmental education, rainwater harvesting, Children’s Forest Programme, and community greening across Kerala (as documented in OISCA South India reports and your own chapter presentations). Building on Prof. P.G. Philip’s insightful article (provided document) on water equity and the 2026 “Water and Gender” theme, this 2027 project shifts focus to the official UN-Water emphasis on water-sanitation-health linkages while retaining gender-inclusive and community empowerment elements. 

The project adopts a  strictly micro-level approach – small-scale, hyper-local, participatory actions in Kottayam district (schools, residential colonies, small panchayats, youth clubs, and women SHGs) that deliver measurable, on-ground impact rather than large public spectacles. All activities are designed for low-cost, high-participation execution, aligning with OISCA’s philosophy of “Industrial, Spiritual and Cultural Advancement” and SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation).

Project Objectives
1. Educate 1,500+ direct participants (children, youth, women, families) on the direct link between safe water, sanitation, hygiene and health outcomes (diarrhoea, malnutrition, vector-borne diseases). 
2. Implement 8–10 tangible micro-conservation/sanitation interventions in Kottayam localities. 
3. Empower women and youth as local “Water-Sanitation Champions”. 
4. Create replicable models that OISCA Kottayam can scale to other Kerala chapters. 
5. Generate documented behavioural change (pre/post surveys on water-saving and hygiene practices).

Detailed List of Meaningful Micro-Level Activities
All activities are planned for **March 15–25, 2027** (with preparatory work from October 2026). They are grouped by target group for easy implementation.

A. School-Level Micro Activities (Target: 8–10 schools in Kottayam taluk, 800+ students)
1. “Water-Health Hero” Poster & Quiz Challenge – Students create posters showing the water → sanitation → health chain (e.g., polluted pond → mosquito breeding → dengue). Top entries displayed in school + community. Quiz on local water quality and hygiene myths. 
2. Water Walk Simulation & Health Impact Role-Play – Children simulate fetching water from distant sources (adapted from 2026 UN kit) and role-play health consequences; followed by hand-washing demo with local PHC doctor. 
3. Mini Rainwater Harvesting Demo Kits – Each school installs a low-cost rooftop model (using 200-litre drum + filter) and maintains a “School Water Diary” for 3 months. 
4. Soak-Pit & Greywater Recycling Workshop– Students build one demonstration soak-pit in school compound; learn how it prevents groundwater contamination and vector diseases.

B. Community & Colony-Level Micro Activities (Target: 4–5 residential colonies / small panchayats, 400+ families)
5. Local Water-Body Clean-Up + Health Mapping Drive – One-day cleaning of a nearby pond or Meenachil River tributary stretch (in coordination with local residents). Participants map pollution sources and health risks (mosquito breeding sites). Waste segregated and composted on-site. 
6.Door-to-Door “Water-Sanitation Health Pledge” Campaign – Volunteers (OISCA youth + women SHGs) visit 200 households with simple Malayalam pamphlets; families sign pledges for (a) fixing leaks, (b) proper toilet use, (c) hand-washing before meals. Follow-up visit after 30 days. 
7. Community Soak-Pit & Kitchen Garden Day – Install 5–8 soak-pits in selected low-income colonies; distribute vegetable seeds for greywater-fed kitchen gardens (demonstrates sanitation → nutrition link).

C. Women & Youth Empowerment Micro Activities (Gender-responsive, building on 2026 theme)
8. Women SHG “Water Champions” Workshop– Half-day session with women Self-Help Groups on household water audits, menstrual hygiene management in sanitation facilities, and leadership in local water committees. Issue “Water-Sanitation Health Champion” badges. 
9. Youth Forum & Micro-Project Competition** – OISCA youth wing organises a one-day forum where teams design and present low-cost solutions (e.g., bamboo rainwater gutters, compost toilets). Winning 3 projects get seed funding (₹2,000 each) for implementation.

D. Institutional & Awareness Micro Activities (Cross-cutting)
10. Expert Talk & Interactive Session by Prof. P.G. Philip – Special lecture at M.G. University or YMCA Kottayam linking 2026 gender insights with 2027 health focus; open to students and public. 
11. Water Quality Testing Camps– Free basic testing (pH, turbidity, coliform) at 3 community points using low-cost kits; immediate health advisory given by local health worker. 
12. Digital Micro-Campaign– Short Malayalam reels (15–30 sec) featuring local OISCA members, school children, and women sharing one personal “Water for Health” action. Hashtag #OISCAKottayamWaterHealth. 
13. Children’s Forest Programme – Water Linkage Plantation– Plant 300 native trees (vetiver, bamboo, fruit trees) along water channels or school boundaries as “Living Filters” to improve groundwater recharge and reduce erosion. 
14. Pledge Wall & Photo Exhibition– Temporary exhibition in a prominent public space (e.g., Kottayam town hall or church/community hall) with before-after photos of micro-projects and health messages.

E. Monitoring & Sustainability Micro Activity
15. 30-Day Follow-Up “Change Tracker”– Participating schools/colonies receive a simple checklist; OISCA volunteers verify water-saving and sanitation behaviour changes. Best performers recognised at a closing ceremony.

Implementation Timeline (Micro-Project Style)
-May–Sept 2026: Partner mapping, material procurement, volunteer training. 
- Oct 2026–Feb 2027: School & community permissions, kit preparation. 
- 15–25 March 2027: Main activity week + inauguration/closing events. 
- April–June 2027: Follow-up, impact report, documentation for OISCA South India.

  Can be funded through OISCA internal + small CSR/local donations + voluntary labour.

Expected Measurable Impact (Micro-Level)
- 1,500+ direct participants; 5,000+ indirect reach via families & social media. 
- 10+ physical assets created (rainwater units, soak-pits, plantations). 
- Behavioural change documented in at least 60% of participating households/schools. 
- Replicable model ready for other OISCA Kerala chapters.

This project report converts the global theme into hyper-local, actionable micro-interventions** that OISCA Kottayam Chapter can own and showcase. Every activity is designed to be hands-on, inclusive, low-budget, and directly linked to health outcomes – exactly in the spirit of OISCA’s environmental and community development mission.
