കുട്ടനാട് മനോഹരമാണ്. ദൈവത്തിന്റെ സ്വന്തം നാട്ടിലെ അതിമനോഹരപ്രദേശം. അവിടെ കാവാലം എന്ന ഗ്രാമം ഞാൻ ജനിക്കുമ്പോൾ തന്നെ പ്രശസ്തി ആർജിച്ചിരുന്ന പ്രദേശമാണ്. മൂന്ന്  കാര്യങ്ങളാണ്   അന്നത്തെ കാലത്ത് കവാലത്തിന്റെ പ്രശസ്തിക്ക് പിന്നിൽ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നത്. കാവാലം ചുണ്ടനും കാവാലം നാരായണ പണിക്കരും.  1963 ൽ ഞാൻ സാധാരണ ഒരു കത്തോലിക്ക കുടുംബത്തിൽ  കർഷകരായ മാതാപിതാക്കളുടെ മൂത്ത മകനായി ജനിച്ചു. ബാല്യകാലത്തെ കുറിച്ച് അധികം ഓർമ്മയില്ല. മാതാപിതാക്കൾ കാര്യമായ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം ഉള്ളവരായിരുന്നില്ല. സാമ്പത്തിക നിലയും അത്ര മെച്ചമായിരുന്നില്ല . ദാരിദ്ര്യത്തോളം എത്തുന്ന സാമ്പത്തിക ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടില്ല എന്ന് മാത്രം. ഞാൻ ജനിക്കുന്ന സമയത്ത് പിതാവിന് പലചരക്ക് കട ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു കേട്ടിട്ടുണ്ട് . എന്റെ ഓർമ്മയിൽ വരുന്ന തൊഴിൽ  കപ്പ കച്ചവടമാണ് . സാമാന്യം വലിയ ഒരു തറവാട് വീടാണ് ഞങ്ങളുടേത് .  ഞങ്ങളുടെ വീട് പല കാരണങ്ങളാലും ആ ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ ശ്രദ്ധിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന ഒന്നാണ്. ഗ്രാമീണർ അധികം വിദ്യാസമ്പന്നരായിരുന്നില്ലായിരുന്ന കാലത്തെ പിതാവിന്റെ സഹോദരങ്ങൾ  നല്ല വിദ്യാഭ്യാസവും ജോലിയും ഉള്ളവരായിരുന്നു ....
